Tips from fellow travelers
Taan Tawan Restaurant
The restaurant is just around the corner to where we stayed. You can chose of your table either your in the restaurant viewing the white beach or beside the beach..though both of them are pretty. Most of the costumers when we got there were locals. As it was the King's birthday, most of the locals are having a weekend in some of the beaches..I've also seen quiet alot of tourist in the area. Some are British that they just sat beside the beach and had coconut juice and there skin in the sun! The food was okey..well, it's the nearest restaurant and the roads to anywhere of the beach resorts are bad as it gets...so, we didn't had chance to go anywhere aside from that we go there for beach hopping!
Grilled chicken and friend rice with ham for hubby's b-fast.And for me, had an ABF..it only cost as 400baht with of cappuccino and expresso!
Samet Villa Restaurant
If it will not rain, the outside resto by the beach is very pretty filled with big trees to have a shelter on but be sure to ask for a mosquito killer!haha..Well, they do have best thai foods. They served from 7am to modnight. They have a good looking small beach front sari-sari store(if that's how it calls). It can get too crowded during weekends and will be deserted during sundays and weekdays. Samet Ville Resort is the only resort that operates around Ao Wai so all the people in the Resort will go in this resto for food! Go there early for lunch and dinner so that you can eat directly. Foods can get too late after order! They also have very friendly staffs..except for the gay frontdesk;-)
Ao Prao Beach Restaurant
We had at stay with free breakfast. Those where GREAT! Lot of choices; cereals, breads, drinks, fresh baked eggs, thai food, hot and cold food and the great fruits! We had our dinner here and this was also great, many food for a small price! It tasted really good!!!
The breakfast, the milk-shakes, the sorbets, the hotdog and the spinaze-rolls with my menu. I loved the place, because you are seated at a "balcony" in front of the beach. You have to eat around sunset-time; beautiful and romantic!!!!
Wonderland Restaurant
Everything about this restaurant brings me back good thoughts.......perfect seats right above the beach, family ran place with the best service, and the food was UNREAL. I ate alot of shrimp at this place but everything that we tried was really good. Also if you are on a budget this place is one of the cheapest on the island, i think that is because it is family ran. Fresh fruit shakes are 25 Baht and you can get a full thai dinner for 35 Baht. SUper cheap....check out the pictures for some of the dishes...
Buddy Bar - Saikaew Beach
i ve been here twice on 2 separate visits to this island. on the second time when i was there, there was some staff at the bar who was leaving to his hometown for good. hence there was a farewell party going on among the staff. to say there's heavy alcohol consumption will be such an understatement. in fact there was some major alcohol abuse going on :-) during my first visit, it was much quieter. like a regular day. this bar has a good selection of cds and u could ask them to play something that interest u after going thru their collection.
Baywatch Bar
This was my favorite place on the island to hang out......they have their busy nights and the more calm nights. The best thing was the lay down seats....it was like a bamboon table but the legs half cut off, and on top of that a rug with big hard pillows. There is no dance floor here, just a lay down spot inside and on the beach are the lay down seats. In the busy season they run a bbq for dinners and serve all kinds of drinks. In the low season its just usually drinks. The owners are from england, good guys and will give you good service. There is a big area to lay down inside by the bar....in that area is a tv where you can come and choose some movies during the day and watch a show. Enjoy a drink and what not.
Johnies Bar
Johnies bar is actually the name Gordons thai wife. I sat one night and BS'd with the guy for quite awhile. At the time they said they were getting ready to move, still unsure of the location they were going. Nice couple though. Stop in and say high.
About BUCKETS
These are awesome, every night most of the bars have happy hour and the buckets go for 100 Baht per piece. Inside the bucket is Sang Sum Thai whisky, a little bottle of red bull, and the rest coke. I have heard and read that on other islands around thailand the buckets arent strong at all. Then i read that on Ko Samet they are much better, and after testing them out i agree, they really do poor quite a bit of booze into them. Two bukets was my limit after trying 3 the first night on the island. Normally if it is not happy hour the buckets go from 150-200 Baht depending on the bar. You can also get other kind of buckets for a higher price, SangSum buckets are the cheapest. The buckets also come in all kinds of western type drinks for a little higher price, anywhere from 250-230 Baht.
Reggae Bar - Saikaew Beach
THis place is very chilled out, Reggae music playing all the time. They have a little room where you can lay around with some low tables and hang out. They also have a bigger back room where there is alittle stage and they hold Karaoke. I was here in July and this bar was never busy, so dont expect big crowds, but its a good place to hang out and have a beer or 2. For the herbal lovers, this is the place to go, but you will get ripped off compared to another place which is right next to the silversands bar. Just be really carefull with that anywhere on the island.
Silver Sand Bar
This is I found quite attractive. Full house with local and tourist people especially tourist. The music is out loud compare to the other bar. Mind that this just for un peak season though but during peak season I bet every bar is open and more people around. This time of season, is just cool and relaxed.
It's ok if you wear whatever you want to wear as there is no restriction on that.
This bar usually gets busy around 9ish. They serve all kinds of drinks and buckets.....for cheap, and especially cheap during happy hour every night from 10pm-12pm. This place is super packed on weekends as all the thai's come during this period. Had one problem during a weekend here but ill get to that after. You can lay down on the beach with a little table next to you, right on a big rug right in front of the fireshow. Or they have tables with chairs on hardground above the beach. Right next to that is the dance floor and the bar. Across from the bar you will also find a little shack that sells sausage, hotdogs, hamburgers, fries, and what not, it stays open as long as the bar does. Its the only place open with food after midnight. Except 7/11 which is quite far from silversands, especially after a bucket or two. About that problem at silversands.....we met some english guys on the island and one of them went to the bathroom, they are kind of stalls outside, english guy turns around and a thai guy knocks him out. He got kicked 2 or 3 times and they walked away. No word about it after. This was on a weekend though and its packed with thai's. I preferred the weeknights at this place. Happy Hour and Flip a Coin From 10pm-12pm. You get buckets for much cheaper and the flip coin....bartender flips a coin you call it, if you get it, the drink is free if not then you pay. Drinks are from 100-200 Baht. The flip a coin does not work with the buckets.
From a shirt and tie to beach bum clothes. You would look weird in a shirt and tie tho.
